3 wooden boxes with lids contain triangles in different sizes, shapes and colors.
Constructive Triangle Box
Presentation
1 The Directress shows the child how to take any one of the box individually to the floor mat.
2 She sits beside the child and places the box of shapes in front of the child.
3 Directress shows how to lay out all the contents on the mat.
4 Box 1 -Trace the lines on the shapes with fingers.
5 Join up the triangles along the line.
6 Then, use the gray triangle as control of error by holding it just above all the shapes made earlier, (not touching) in turn.
7 The Directress then invites the child to put the shapes together, matching the black lines. the resulting shapes are discussed and named.
8 Directress may use the Three Period lesson to teach the child the name of the shapes that could be formed with the various shapes, for e.g. hexagon, triangle, rhombus,...etc.
Rectangular Box
Presentation
1 Invite the child to work with the 'rectangular box'.
2 Show the child where the rectangular box is located on the shelf.
3 When the child has made the selection of the material, begin with the third step after naming the material for the child.
4 Indicate the procedure for carrying the material: one hand on each side of the rectangular box with thumbs on top and fingers on the bottom.
5 Place the box in the upper left side of the rug.
6 Remove the lid and place to the right of the box.
7 Say, "I will make shapes from the triangles."
8 Remove from the box the two green and two yellow isosceles triangles one at a time and place them in a straight line at the bottom of the rug.
9 With the index and middle fingers, trace the black lines on the green triangles.
10 Slide them together, forming a square.
11 Move the square below the rectangle box.
12 With the index and middle fingers, trace the black lines on the yellow triangles.
13 Slide them together, forming a rhomboid.
14 Move the rhomboid to the right of the square.
15 Select from the box ,the two grey, two green, and two yellow scalene right triangles one at a time and place them in a straight line at the bottom of the rug.
16 Trace the black line on the grey triangles.
17 Slide them together, forming a rhomboid.
18 Trace the black line on the yellow triangles.
19 Slide them together, forming a rhomboid.
20 Select from the box the two yellow equilateral triangles and the red scalene triangles one at a time and place them in a straight line at the bottom of the rug.
21 Trace the black line on the two yellow triangles.
22 Slide them together, forming a rhombus.
23 Trace the black line on the red triangles.
24 Slide them together, forming a trapezoid.
25 Replace the material into the box beginning with the trapezoid to the lower left, rhombus in upper left, right angle triangles in right as rectangles, and isosceles triangles as a square.
26 Return the material to the shelf in the manner as indicated in #3.
Large Hexagonal Box
Presentation
1 Invite the child to work with the 'large hexagonal box'.
2 Show the child where the large hexagonal box is located on the shelf. When the child has made the selection of the material, begin with the third step after naming the material for the child.
3 Indicate the procedure for carrying the material: one hand on each side of the hexagonal box, with the thumbs on top and fingers on the bottom.
4 Place the box on a rug.
5 Place the box in the upper left side of the rug.
6 Remove the lid and place it to the right of the box.
7 Say, "I will make shapes with triangles."
8 Remove the yellow equilateral triangle and place it at the bottom of the rug.
9 Remove the three isosceles obtuse triangles with the black line on the side opposite to the obtuse angle and place them in a straight line to the right of the equilateral triangle.
10 With the index and middle fingers trace the black line of the equilateral triangle and the black line of one of the isosceles obtuse triangles.
11 Slide the black line of the second triangle against the black line of the equilateral triangle.
12 Continue with the remaining triangles in the same manner, thus forming a hexagon.
13 Indicate the equilateral triangle inscribed in the hexagon by tracing the black line with the index and forefinger.
14 Select from the box the yellow isosceles obtuse triangles with the black line on the two sides adjacent to the obtuse angle and place them in a straight line to the right of the yellow hexagon just formed.
15 With the index and middle fingers, trace the black line of the first isosceles triangle and the black line of the second isosceles triangle.
16 Continue in the same manner with the third triangle.
17 Superimpose the large yellow equilateral triangle over the equilateral triangle formed by the three isosceles triangles.
18 Return the equilateral triangle.
19 Select the two red triangles one at a time and place them in a straight line to the right of the equilateral triangle.
20 With the index and middle fingers, trace the black line on each triangle.
21 Then slide the triangles together at the black lines forming a rhombus.
22 Select from the box two grey triangles one at a time and place them in a straight line to the right of the red rhombus.
23 With the index and middles fingers, trace the black line on each triangle.
24 Then slide the triangles together at the black lines forming a rhomboid.
25 Replace the material into the box, beginning with the grey rhombus.
26 Return the material to the shelf in the manner indicated in step #3.
Purpose
To show the various plane figures included in the hexagon.
Refinement of the discrimination of geometric shapes.
Development of concentration, order, coordination, and independence.
Preparation for geometry.
Development of the appreciation of line and form.
Development of creativity.
